Quote of the Day
The Philosophy of Tea is not mere aestheticism ... for it expresses conjointly with ethics and religion our whole point of view about man and nature. It is hygiene, for it enforces cleanliness; it is economics, for it shows comfort in simplicity rather than in the complex and costly; it is moral geometry, inasmuch as it defines our sense of proportion to the universe

Bord Bia awards for cream of €76m organic producers

IRELAND'S organic food market is worth an estimated €76 million, according to Bord Bia.

The figure was revealed yesterday when the winners of the first national organic awards were announced at SHOP, the annual food and drink retail trade event at the RDS in Ballsbridge.

St Tola organic goat's log from Inagh Farmhouse Cheese, Co Clare, won the award for the best overall organic product for 2007 as well as a category award for the best chilled-frozen product.

Other category award winners were Katie's organic oat jumblies (biscuits) from Cístí Gugane Barra, Co Cork, and Earl Grey tea from Solaris Herbs, Galway, (organic grocery product).

The awards, organised by Bord Bia in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, attracted more than 70 entries.

Bord Bia chief executive Aidan Cotter said they will further enhance trade and consumer awareness of Irish organic capabilities and create a platform for organic producers to demonstrate the broad range and high quality of products available.

"Organic food is one of the fastest growing segments of the European food market and has a growth rate of 15%-20% in Ireland," he said.

"Bord Bia will continue to work with and support the organic sector with significant optimism towards its further development in Ireland."

Mr Cotter said Bord Bia, in consultation with the Organic Market Development Group (OMDG), has drawn up a three-year marketing plan for the development of Ireland's organic food market.

Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Minister Mary Coughlan approved €1.5m towards 12 separate organic marketing initiatives during 2006-2009.

Mr Cotter said Bord Bia will continue to implement the programme in association with the OMDG.
