Even before he completed his Bsc in Herbal Medicine, Joerg Mueller had been involved in the commercial harvest of wild herbs for high end restaurants and the blending of tea. Having begun blending teas for his local cafe on a part-time basis during his college days in Lancashire, he noticed that his creations quickly began to outsell the coffees on offer.
"The teas just took over in popularity and it was at that moment I saw the long-term possibilities in this as a business."
Solaris Botanicals emplys 3 full-time and 4 on a commission basis, and plans further expansion of staff numbers over the next year. Since it was founded, Solaris has won 9 Great Taste Awards in 3 years, effectively the Olympics of the fine food trade, and has twice been the winner of the Best Irish Organic Grocery Product Award.
In 2008, the company won the Galway Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award & Best Connaught Ethnic Business in the Business Achievers Awards. The products are stocked in over 80 outlets throughout Ireland, and the company is currently building a network of dealers in the UK, including prestige retailers like Harrods & Planet Organic.
In 2010, Mr. Mueller intends marketing on the EU mainland. "We are proud that our company can grow and succeed even in a difficult climate, and demonstrate that speciality teas such as green teas, and herbal teas can compete against business categories like IT or manufacturing,"he says. The Galway based family business was established in 2006 by Joerg Mueller and his partner Karin Wieland, and has seen the annual turnover increase from Eur 10,000 to 140,000. The company recently launched a biodegradable silken tea bag range, and flowering teas, with packaging for its entire range being 100% biodegradable to minimise impact on resources and the environment.
"We are still growing due to a concept that is just starting to become commercial and innovation plays a big part in this process," he says.
"We have concentrated on growth in Ireland over the past 3 years, but are now beginning to cast our net wider and we have attracted distributors in Italy, France and Saudi Arabia. Happily, we are yet largely untouched by the recession in terms of the popularity of our high grade, whole leaf teas, but credit control and getting paid has become more difficult in recent months."
Activity: Blending of Organic, whole leaf green teas, white teas, herbal teas, pu-erh, oolong, rooibos. Our range is complemented by tea accessories, flowering teas and a foodservice range of biodegradable silken tea bags.
