Solaris Award 10 Oct 2007
Galway Independent
A Galway-based company has won Ireland's top organic food award.
Solaris Tea, which makes a range of organic tea products, has won a succession of awards including three gold medals at this year's Great Taste Awards, the Oscars of the speciality food business in Europe. The company has now topped this, with a 'Best Organic Grocery Product' award from Ireland's first Bord Bia/Department of Agriculture Organic Awards.
Solaris has been presented with two "one gold star" products: Its Organic Green Tea Chai and its Organic Children's Herbal Tea both delighted judges. Solaris Organic Earl Grey set new standards with winning a "three star gold" award. Out of 5000 products entering the awards only 25 products reached the benchmark of a "three star gold" award.
Each year, almost 5000 foods are blind-tasted in the Great Taste Awards by up to three separate teams of experts before the awards are made. There have been nearly two weeks of tasting by over 400 independent judges. As a result, Great Taste Awards are given out for excellence in taste, texture and flavour.
Bob Farrand of the Guild of Fine Food, said: "These awards have been running for 14 years now and are a recognised mark of excellence that consumers can trust and rely on."
"The winning products have been through a thorough judging process and we are able to assure consumers that the Great Taste logo, which all award winners can use, signifies genuine, proven fine food. It's not just a supermarket premium marketing slogan that bears almost no relation to the quality of the food in the packet."
Solaris has presently two product ranges:
15 individually Hand-blended, certified organic speciality teas designed to nourish different body systems. Joerg Mueller, and Karin Wieland owners of Solaris are both qualified Medical Herbalists with a degree in Herbal Medicine. "We specifically blended our herbal teas with different body systems in mind such as nervous system (stress), digestive system (bloating, etc.), immune system (colds, coughs, etc) and many more. The difference is that we also blend our herbal teas for taste."
The second range are premium organic speciality teas and blends such as White Tea Chai, Green Tea Chai, Oolong, Jasmine Tea, King of Pu-Erh, and Earl Grey. Unusual blends such as Mate Chocolate Mint or Rooibos Chocolate Chai will surprise the tea lovers palate.
Joerg Mueller is of the belief that quality organic tea will reach the same status as wine. "There is a lot of research now on the health benefits of tea, but this only applies to whole leaf tea. Once the tea leaf is broken down, most of its anti-oxidants are lost."
Solaris' product range is sold in Healthfood Stores and Deli's throughout the city.
